Ari Känsäkoski returns to the Global Solo Challenge for the 2027-2028 edition. The Finnish skipper faced a tough setback during the 2023-2024 race when his Class40 ZEROchallenge dismasted in the Roaring Forties, over 1,200 miles from land. He remained composed, devising a plan to reach Africa. Känsäkoski spent 25 days nursing his boat under jury rig and engine power, including mid-ocean refueling from the Japanese fishing vessel Tomi Maru and the Finnlines ferry Finncanopus. He ultimately reached Durban but was forced to retire from the event. His journey earned him the Global Solo Challenge "Seamanship" award, highlighting his resilience.

Now, Känsäkoski is determined to complete his journey. He expresses a lifelong passion for sailing, ignited at 12 and further fueled by a memorable encounter with sailor Harry Harkimos at 17. After purchasing his boat Fuji for the canceled Global Ocean Race 2015, he sees the Global Solo Challenge as a chance to fulfill his dream.

Currently, he is refitting ZEROchallenge in Finland, installing a new mast. Känsäkoski acknowledges that maintaining a solid routine for rest and nutrition will be crucial for his performance. The sailing community eagerly anticipates his next adventure.
