Major League Baseball reports a significant rise in the percentage of Black players on Opening Day rosters, marking the first consecutive increase in over 20 years. This year, 6.8% of players are Black, up from 6.2% in 2025 and 6.0% in 2024. The 0.6% jump is the largest since a 0.7% increase from 2017 to 2018. Since the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport began tracking in 1991, the percentage started at 18%. Notably, 20 of the 64 Black players this season participated in MLB development programs, including the MLB Youth Academy and the Hank Aaron Invitational. The average age of Black players stands at 27.8, compared to the overall average of 29.25. Additionally, 17 Black players in the minors are on Opening Day 40-man rosters, highlighting a promising future for diversity in the league.
