SailGP's thrilling NYC event concludes with Tom Slingsby's Australian team dominating the leaderboard despite challenging conditions. This weekend's action reveals how unpredictable weather shapes competitive sailing and the resilience of teams under pressure.
The Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix, held on May 30-31, marks the only SailGP event in American waters for 2023. The event faced fierce winds on Saturday, preventing most teams from launching, with only four boats hitting the water. Australia faced a setback with a pre-race crash, leaving them to compete with a reduced fleet. Taylor Canfield, driver of the U.S. SailGP Team, described the chaotic conditions, emphasizing the need for quick adjustments in high-stakes moments.
Sunday brought improved weather, allowing all boats to launch, but the Spanish team encountered hydraulic issues, sidelining them early. Nevertheless, the day featured intense competition, with the U.S. team claiming victory in Race 2, alongside strong performances from the Brits and Australians. However, a collision in Race 3 involving the U.S., Italy, and Brazil led to further drama. The weekend showcased both the excitement and unpredictability of the sport, with Slingsby's Australian-flagged Bonds Flying Roos ultimately taking the top spot in NYC.
