The Bonds Flying Roos have made history as the first-ever champions of the ENEL Rio Sail Grand Prix. This victory not only cements their place in SailGP history but also positions them atop the 2026 Rolex SailGP Championship leaderboard.
On a challenging Super Sunday beneath Sugarloaf Mountain, the Australians showcased their skills with a flawless performance, winning all three fleet races and earning a spot in the winner-takes-all Podium Final. Despite facing a late five-point penalty for contact with Switzerland, the Bonds Flying Roos amassed an impressive 58 points out of a possible 70.
In the Podium Final, the Aussies seized control early, capitalizing on a mid-race penalty issued to Artemis Racing. They cruised to victory, leaving Spain's Los Gallos in second and Artemis in third. This win marks a significant achievement for Iain 'Goobs' Jensen, who celebrates his first SailGP event victory while representing Australia.
Driver and CEO Tom Slingsby praised his team's potential, expressing pride in their performance and the special significance of this win. With this result, the Bonds Flying Roos gain a seven-point lead over Emirates GBR, solidifying their status as frontrunners in the season. Next up, they aim to maintain their lead at the Apex Group Bermuda Sail Grand Prix on May 9-10.
