Rico Verhoeven's coach, Peter Fury, demands a rematch with Oleksandr Usyk after a controversial stoppage in their heavyweight bout in Egypt. This call to action raises questions about the implications for both fighters as the heavyweight landscape shifts.
In a gripping contest, Verhoeven, the underdog, showcased his skills against the undefeated Usyk (25-0, 16 KOs). The fight, held near the pyramids of Giza, was intensely competitive, with scorecards reading 95-95, 95-95, and 96-94 in favor of Verhoeven after Round 10. However, Usyk's knockdown late in Round 11 prompted referee Mark Lyson to halt the fight, sparking controversy as many believed the stoppage came after the round's bell.
Fury expressed concerns over the timing of the stoppage, stating, “I think the stoppage was early… Usyk's got the win, full congratulations to him.” He argues Verhoeven deserves another chance, emphasizing the significance of experience in this high-stakes bout.
Verhoeven himself felt the stoppage was premature, stating, “I thought it was a little bit early… Let me go out on my shield.” Meanwhile, Agit Kabayel, the mandatory challenger for Usyk's WBC title, is also ready to stake his claim for a title shot, urging for a fight in Germany.
