Brisbane Race Week, presented by Porsche Centre Brisbane, kicks off today at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron with nearly 50 boats ready to compete. This year’s fresh format promises to deliver a unique racing experience, solidifying its status as one of Queensland's premier regattas.
Participants can expect a packed schedule with varied formats each day, enhancing both competition and community spirit. The social events, including A Night in Rio and Legends on the Lawn, foster connections among crews beyond the water.
Event Director Anton Prange emphasizes the regatta's community-driven approach, stating, "It's a regatta where you can go sailing with your mates and still go home to your own bed at night." The onshore atmosphere is equally significant, with crews contributing a bottle of rum to share, creating a fun and engaging environment.
The racing kicks off with the Green Island Lap, featuring a 'hot lap' format inspired by Formula 1. Boats nominate their predicted times, aiming to come closest to their estimates. Race Officer Paul Bolton returns for his fourth year, confident in the event's growing quality and spirit. With around 400 people involved, the demand and enthusiasm for Brisbane Race Week continue to rise, marking a vibrant sailing tradition in the region.
