The regatta benefited from generous support, including sponsorships from Rooster and Ovington, along with funding from Sport England and the RYA evolution fund.
Furthermore, the weekend kicked off with a comprehensive coaching session led by Eve Kennedy. She was joined by Emily Dengate and Jill Reid, who provided guidance to the participants. The weather conditions were favorable, allowing sailors to practice various techniques. As they navigated the waters, many experienced capsizes, but they emerged with smiles, learning from each mishap.
Skills Development and Confidence Building
Additionally, the coaching day focused on essential sailing skills, including tacks, gybes, and windward-leeward courses. Participants also tackled the challenge of tacking while leaving the tiller behind their backs. This engaging training session significantly boosted the sailors' confidence, and it was rewarding to witness their growth throughout the day.
In attendance was Sallie Bowd, the Sailing Developer for RYA Midlands. She provided support and information about local initiatives aimed at promoting female participation in sailing. The camaraderie among participants was palpable, culminating in a delightful evening of Paint, Pizza & Prosecco, allowing everyone to unwind after a day full of learning.
Exciting Races and Competitive Spirit
Consequently, Sunday marked the commencement of competitive racing, managed entirely by a female team. Natalia Orgonova served as the Race Officer, with Jill Reid assisting her, while Viki Myatt and Alenka Hrovat ensured safety on the water. The day featured six races conducted on an L course, divided into two fleets: ILCA 4 and ILCA 6.
Notably, Libby Farnell from Largs SC excelled in the ILCA 4 fleet, clinching victory in every race except one, where Nancy Ellis from Rutland SC seized the opportunity for a win after an unexpected capsize by Farnell. The ILCA 6 fleet also showcased fierce competition, with Sarah Green from Prestwick SC challenging the dominance of England. However, Christine Statham maintained her lead in most races, only relinquishing it once to Maria Veselova Smith.
