Champions Cup: a notable absentee from the Top 14
French rugby has been shaken by the announcement of the 24 clubs qualified for the upcoming Champions Cup, highlighted by the unexpected absence of Rugby Club Toulonnais, a semi-finalist last season. This exclusion shines a light on the increasing tensions within the Top 14 and raises questions about the balance between past performances and current results.
RCT, despite being in contention for the title in 2023, finished 9th in the regular season, failing to qualify for the prestigious competition. Instead, the top eight in the standings will represent France: Toulouse, Montpellier, Stade Français, Pau, Racing 92, La Rochelle, Clermont, and Bordeaux-Bègles. This return to the Champions Cup is particularly significant for Montpellier, Stade Français, and Racing, who are stepping in for Bayonne, Castres, and Toulon.
On the international front, other notable absences, such as those of the Harlequins, the Sharks from Durban, and Edinburgh, illustrate an increasingly fierce competition. Thus, the Lions and Connacht, finishing 7th and 8th in the URC, are stepping up a level, while Italy once again finds itself on the sidelines, with Treviso failing to qualify.
