Adam Yates is out of the Giro d'Italia after a brutal crash forced him to abandon before stage 3. This shocking turn of events not only impacts Yates but also sends ripples through the UAE Team Emirates-XRG squad, already grappling with injuries.
Yates crashed during a chaotic descent on stage 2, losing over 13 minutes and finishing in Veliko Tarnovo with visible injuries, including a bloodied ear. He was one of five UAE Team Emirates-XRG riders involved in the incident, with Jay Vine and Marc Soler also forced to withdraw, both requiring hospital treatment.
Initially cleared of concussion, Yates later exhibited delayed symptoms, leading the team to withdraw him from the next stage. This marks Yates' first Grand Tour abandonment, despite having completed 16 prior events, finishing in the top 10 in seven of them.
UAE Team Emirates-XRG's challenges compound as they previously lost João Almeida to illness and face a season marred by injuries, including Tim Wellens’ collarbone fracture. The team, which dominated the previous season with 97 wins, now faces a steep uphill battle as they navigate this year's Giro d'Italia without their top contenders.
