Anthon Charmig captures his first WorldTour victory in over four years at stage 2 of the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, showcasing a stunning solo breakaway. This win not only marks a significant milestone for Charmig but also shifts the dynamics as the competition intensifies ahead of the crucial team time trial.

Charmig, 28, launched his decisive move on the Cat. 3 Côte de Saint-Vidal, breaking free from a ten-man group with 12 kilometers remaining. He crossed the finish line solo, leaving Henri-Francois Renard-Haquin (Picnic PostNL) to secure second place, 43 seconds later, while Vlad Van Mechelen (Bahrain Victorious) rounded out the top three.

Despite the stage's challenging 3,500 meters of climbing, the main contenders conserved energy for tomorrow's team time trial, with Alex Baudin (EF Education-EasyPost) maintaining his overall lead, finishing in the peloton about 3:10 behind Charmig.

Charmig expressed his joy, stating, “It’s an incredible feeling. I don’t get that many chances each year.” With the Tour de France looming, this victory positions him as a key player for his team, Uno-X, as they eye selection for the upcoming grand tour.
