Benoît Cosnefroy of UAE Team Emirates-XRG delivers a stunning long-range sprint to secure victory on stage 2 of the Tour de Hongrie. This unexpected win reshapes the dynamics of the race.
Cosnefroy's aggressive tactics shone through on a challenging 205.8km route from Szarvas to Paks. With 25km remaining, he capitalized on crosswinds, breaking away from the peloton and forming a crucial first echelon. He launched his decisive attack on a small climb with 17km to go, taking three riders with him and enticing two more to follow.
Despite a late surge from the peloton, which reformed and closed in to just six seconds behind, hesitation among the chasing riders allowed Cosnefroy to maintain his lead. Alexis Renard from Cofidis finished second, followed closely by Max Kanter of XDS Astana in third.
Rui Oliveira, Cosnefroy’s teammate, played a pivotal role, pushing hard to keep the breakaway intact, ultimately ensuring their success. With this victory, Cosnefroy not only clinches a stage win but also sends a strong message to his competitors as the Tour de Hongrie heats up.
