Derek Gee-West faces a tough start at the Giro d'Italia after missing crucial pre-race preparations due to illness. Here’s why his situation could impact the general classification race significantly.

The Canadian champion, who finished fourth overall last year, has been sidelined since the Volta a Catalunya in March. His absence from the altitude camp in Sierra Nevada means he lacks the ideal shape heading into his third Giro. However, Gee-West remains one of Lidl-Trek's three leaders, alongside Giulio Ciccone and Jonathan Milan, which eases some pressure as he aims to contribute to the team's strategy.

Gee-West acknowledges the setback, stating, “Unfortunately, this year, because I got quite sick after Catalonia, I missed the prep camp.” Despite this, he maintains a calm demeanor, emphasizing a fresh mindset as he approaches the race: “I think for sure it'll be a loss that I will feel towards the start of the race... but after two weeks, I feel like it's kind of a reset.”

His previous experience in Grand Tours shows he can improve over the race. In 2025, he struggled early but surged to fourth by the end. Can he replicate that performance again? Only time will tell as the Giro unfolds.
