Didi Senft: The Devil's Unexpected Absence
However, cycling fans were surprised to notice the absence of Didi Senft, famously known as 'The Devil', during the initial stage of this year’s Tour de France in Barcelona. For over 30 years, Senft has been a vibrant presence at the race, cheering on cyclists with his iconic toasting fork. This year, however, he had to prioritize watching over his vandalized campervan instead.
Moreover, reports from Catalan newspaper La Vanguardia revealed that Senft’s campervan was broken into, prompting him to miss the exciting team time trial. The 74-year-old found himself dealing with smashed windows and the aftermath of theft rather than enjoying the thrilling atmosphere of the race.
Didi's Robbery: A Closer Look
Furthermore, details of the robbery paint a somewhat comical picture. The thieves made off with a mobile mini-fridge filled with ham and cheese, a comb, a toothbrush, and a loudspeaker. While the stolen items might seem trivial, Senft’s frustration was palpable as he noted, “much more has already been stolen—and it’s only noon.”
Additionally, despite losing some belongings, the toasting fork that has become a symbol of his passion for cycling remained safe. Senft cleverly covered the broken window with a “devilishly elegant red cloth” to shield his campervan from further damage while reporting the incident to local authorities.
Senft's Return to the Tour
In contrast to his unfortunate start, Didi Senft quickly rejoined the Tour during stages 2 and 3 in the Pyrenees. His spirit remained unbroken, as he happily soaked his feet in a mountain river after the chaos of the previous day. His return was met with joy from fellow fans, who appreciate his colorful personality and dedication to the sport.
Notably, the Pyrenees hold special significance for Senft. His first appearance at the Tour occurred here in 1993, coinciding with a stage won by the legendary Oliverio Rincón. This year, he once again found himself among enthusiastic fans, yelling encouragement as riders sped past him.
In summary: Didi Senft’s unexpected absence from stage 1 of the Tour de France highlighted the unpredictable nature of both life and sport. Despite the setback, he quickly returned with his usual enthusiasm. To stay on top of all things Cycling, follow Sports-Podcasts.com on YouTube.
