Remco Evenepoel faces pressure to alter his approach after a disappointing performance in the 2025 Amstel Gold Race. This shift in strategy could redefine his season's trajectory.
In 2025, Evenepoel kicked off his year with a stunning victory over Wout van Aert at De Brabantse Pijl. However, this win may have set him up for failure in the Amstel Gold Race. During last year's event, Evenepoel and Mattias Skjelmose chased down Tadej Pogačar's late attack, but Evenepoel hesitated at the finish and ultimately placed third behind Skjelmose and Pogačar.
Klaas Lodewyck, Evenepoel's team manager at Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, emphasizes the need for a tactical shift. He noted that Evenepoel's confidence from his earlier victory clouded his judgment, leading to a missed opportunity when Pogačar was vulnerable. Lodewyck believes Evenepoel should take control of the race earlier, rather than relying on a sprint finish on the final climb.
The 2026 Amstel Gold Race, featuring 33 climbs over 257.2 kilometers, presents a chance for Evenepoel to implement these lessons and reclaim his status among cycling's elite.
