Young Spanish cyclist Jaume Guardeño remains in intensive care two weeks after a serious training crash. This situation highlights the unforeseen dangers athletes face in their pursuit of excellence.
Guardeño, 23, suffered significant head injuries when he collided with a car during a training ride on March 31, shortly after finishing 29th in the Volta a Catalunya for his Caja Rural-Seguros RGA team. The incident occurred near his hometown of Caldes de Montbui, north of Barcelona, when he hit a rock while descending. He was airlifted to Parc Taulí hospital in Sabadell, Catalunya, where he is currently in a coma.
His team provided an update, stating he is in critical but stable condition, under constant observation, and will undergo additional surgeries in the coming days. Guardeño, who turned professional in 2024, is regarded as one of the brightest talents in his team, having previously achieved notable placements in major races, including a 14th overall finish in the Vuelta a España.
Caja Rural-Seguros RGA rider Abel Balderstone emphasized the unpredictable nature of such accidents, reminding everyone of the risks involved in cycling. The cycling community continues to rally behind Guardeño, wishing him a swift recovery.
