Jay Vine faces a challenging road to recovery after a series of setbacks in the 2026 season, including a serious crash during the Giro d’Italia. Here’s why his cautious comeback could influence his performance for the rest of the year.
The UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider started strong, clinching victories at the Australian time trial championship and the Tour Down Under. However, a collision with a kangaroo nearly derailed his momentum. After wrist surgery, Vine returned to racing at the Volta a Catalunya but had to abandon after just three stages due to continued pain from a fractured wrist.
His troubles intensified at the Giro d’Italia, where a mass crash on stage 2 resulted in a concussion and an elbow fracture, forcing him to leave in an ambulance. Despite this tumultuous stretch, Vine remains optimistic. Two weeks post-Giro, he reports improvement in his concussion symptoms and overall well-being.
Vine is gradually returning to outdoor training but is keeping his racing schedule open for now. Meanwhile, his team has continued to excel, winning four stages in the Giro’s first two weeks, with Jhonatan Narvaez competing for the maglia ciclamino. Vine’s cautious approach could be pivotal as he aims to regain full fitness and make a significant impact in the second half of the season.
