João Almeida finishes last in the gruppetto during the first stage of the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, highlighting his ongoing struggles as he recovers from illness. Here’s why his current condition could reshape the UAE Team Emirates strategy for the upcoming Tour de France.

The UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider, initially expected to compete in the Giro d'Italia, opted out due to a virus that affected his performance. After undergoing blood tests following a disappointing showing at the Volta a Catalunya, Almeida took a nine-week hiatus to rebuild his fitness. “I don’t have any goals, I’ll see how I feel,” he stated, emphasizing his uncertain status ahead of the Tour de France.

Despite his struggles, Almeida reports feeling better in training. However, he indicates a preference to target the Vuelta a España, where he finished second overall last year. Meanwhile, teammate Tadej Pogacar aims for his fifth Tour de France victory this July, but Almeida's absence as a key domestique raises questions about the team’s dynamics.

The UAE roster remains fluid, with several riders still recovering from injuries. Almeida’s focus on regaining form could redefine his role in the team's future plans, as he prioritizes readiness over immediate competition.
