Jonathan Milan expresses regret to his Lidl-Trek teammates after failing to secure a sprint victory in Stage 18 of the Giro d'Italia, held in Pieve di Soligo. This marks another missed opportunity for Milan, who entered the Grand Tour as a sprint favorite but remains without a win as the race approaches its finale on Sunday in Rome.
Milan acknowledges the team's hard work, stating, “The guys did an amazing job, and I have to say sorry to them.” Despite the challenging course, which included a steep climb at the Muro di Ca' del Poggio, the team aimed for a controlled sprint finish. Milan, who reached the climb first, faced a tough fight against the general classification contenders and lost valuable positioning in the final corner.
As rain fell on the final kilometer, rival sprinter Paul Magnier positioned himself well, while Milan lagged behind without teammates to assist him. He admits, “I made a mistake on positioning myself on the second to last turn,” and recognizes that staying closer to Magnier's wheel could have changed the outcome. With the season's end in sight, Milan's performance raises questions about the team’s strategy moving forward.
