Giddings, just 22 and previously scheduled for the Classique Dunkerque, received an urgent call from his team with less than 48 hours before the race. A campylobacter outbreak, linked to racing over contaminated terrain at the Famenne Ardenne Classic, has sidelined multiple riders, including teammate Liam Slock.
Upon receiving the call, Giddings quickly prepared for his debut. "I packed my suitcase as soon as I had the first phone call," he stated, emphasizing his readiness. He flew from Manchester to Nessebar, Bulgaria, the night before the race, even squeezing in a training session that morning. Giddings had been on the Giro reserve list and was chosen due to his availability and current form.
