Marianne Vos faced a dramatic setback during the opening stage of the Vuelta España Femenina, crashing just 10 kilometers from the finish line. The crash occurred on a slippery descent in Salvaterra de Miño, forcing Vos into a desperate chase to rejoin the peloton. “I landed in the ditch,” she revealed to Eurosport, describing the incident that went unnoticed by the cameras. With her teammates’ support, Vos fought through traffic and closed a 23-second gap, making it back just in time for the final stretch alongside teammate Pauline Ferrand-Prévot.
As the sprint commenced with 200 meters to go, Vos attempted to find her footing but couldn’t quite catch Noemi Rüegg of EF Education-Oatly, who surged ahead for the win. Vos expressed gratitude for her team’s assistance during the chase, stating, “I’m thankful for their help.” Although she felt “pretty much ok” post-crash, Vos remains cautious about her recovery moving forward.
