Pinarello addresses the handlebar failure experienced by Filippo Ganna during Wednesday's Dwars Door Vlaanderen, where he clinched victory. With 38 kilometers remaining, the Ineos Grenadiers cyclist had to switch bikes after the right-hand drop of his Pinarello Dogma F cockpit became loose. The damaged handlebar, held by the brake hose and tape, bent backward after Ganna adjusted it while waiting for a replacement bike.
In a statement to Cyclingnews, Pinarello reveals that the issue stems from excessive tightening of the brake lever clamp, causing the handlebar to fail around the lever. This indicates potential mechanical oversight during bike assembly. The Shimano Dura-Ace shifter and brake lever hood require precise torque settings to secure them around the carbon fiber handlebar. Insufficient tightening causes instability, while overtightening can damage the handlebar, particularly under the stress of cobbled terrain.
Ganna's impressive late surge saw him outpace Wout van Aert for a dramatic win, despite the equipment mishap. Cyclingnews has reached out to Ineos Grenadiers for additional insights into the situation.
