Puck Pieterse sets her sights on a standout result as she gears up for the Ardennes Classics, keen to defend her title at La Flèche Wallonne. Here’s why her perspective on success could redefine her season.
Last year, the 23-year-old Dutch rider clinched victory at La Flèche Wallonne and had a remarkable run across the Ardennes Classics, securing third at Amstel Gold Race and second at Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes. However, she acknowledges that the competition has intensified. Pieterse notes, “The overall level has increased,” pointing to the rise of formidable contenders like those from FDJ United-SUEZ, who have achieved multiple Classic victories this spring.
Starting this week's campaign with a tenth-place finish at Amstel Gold Race, Pieterse remains undeterred. She emphasizes her desire for a single standout result over multiple podiums, stating, “I’d rather have one real standout result than three podiums.” Her recent performances, including a fourth at Milan-San Remo and a third at the Tour of Flanders, illustrate her readiness to tackle the challenges ahead.
As the Ardennes campaign unfolds, all eyes will be on Pieterse to see if she can replicate last year's success in a fiercely competitive environment.
