Organisers of the Tour de Romandie announce the postponement of the Women's WorldTour race to 2027, aiming to secure financial stability. This decision underscores the challenges in funding women's cycling events amidst competing resources.
The race, originally set for September 4-6, 2026, faces a 10% budget shortfall. To mitigate this, race officials have turned their attention to attracting World Champion Tadej Pogačar for the men's event. Pogačar recently won the men's race in a plain yellow jersey due to a lack of sponsorship, highlighting the financial strain on the event.
The Tour de Romandie Foundation's press release indicates that while discussions around funding for the women's race are promising, competing events like the Tour de France Femmes in Lausanne are consuming critical resources. The decision to delay aims to respect local committees already preparing for the event and to ensure the foundation's financial health.
The Tour de Romandie Féminin, established in 2022, has seen winners like Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio and Demi Vollering, but this postponement reflects a broader concern for the viability and quality of women's cycling events in the future.
