Dani Sordo slams WRC regulations, calling the rule requiring tyre selection 13 hours before use “stupid.” This controversy arises from the recent rally in Portugal, where crews had to finalize their tyre choices immediately after Thursday’s stage three, which wrapped up at 7 PM. With no return to service before Friday's stages, the regulations left Sordo in a bind after a mix-up in the tyre fitting zone resulted in him having more hard tyres than the softs he preferred.
As a result, Sordo struggled for speed during the morning loop, while competitors on soft rubber gained a significant advantage. Sordo criticizes the rule, stating, “It's completely mad. In F1 they don't put the tyres two days before!” He emphasizes the need for better strategies and confidence in weather forecasts to enhance the rally experience for fans.
The FIA responded, explaining that a tyre fitting zone could not be held on Friday morning due to logistical constraints involving the remote service in Arganil. They noted that crews could adjust their tyre strategies during the morning remote service. The ongoing debate around these regulations could have lasting implications for future WRC events.
