Round-the-Island Race: A Historic Sailing Event
Moreover, the Round-the-Island Race (RTI) is set to reclaim its traditional July schedule this year. Taking place on July 25 at 8:00 a.m., this race showcases the spirit of sailing on Martha's Vineyard. Celebrating its 89th edition, the RTI is one of the oldest distance races in the country, attracting sailors from the Northeast.
Additionally, this year's event features a fleet of 47 boats competing across nine distinct classes. The categories include six for PHRF and others for PHRF Non-Spinnaker, PHRF Double-Handed Spinnaker, and Multihull. Notably, defending champions will return to defend their titles, adding an exciting layer of competition.
Competitive Spirit in the Sailing Community
Furthermore, the competition is fierce, with four defending class champions ready to take on the challenge. Stephen Besse's J/120 Apres, Dan Rabin's Salona 33 Virgo, William Marsh's Beneteau First 35 Ruse, and Chip Hawkins' C&C 41 Caneel are all vying for victory. Each of these boats showcases the skill and dedication of their respective crews.
In addition, event co-chair Cindy Alten-DeLotto expressed enthusiasm regarding the growth of the event. She noted an increased interest in the Multihull and Double-Handed classes, each featuring five entries. This trend highlights the appeal of the race to a diverse range of boats and sailor combinations.
Excitement and Anticipation for the Race
Notably, the fleet includes a wide array of vessels, from the compact J/29 Seefest to the impressive 72-foot Nissen Cutter sloop, Isabel. Peter Lacoste, sailing with his family on the Moody DS54 Southern Cross, emphasized the importance of family involvement in sailing. His crew enjoys the camaraderie and challenges presented by the RTI.
In contrast, Ryan Scudder and his crew have been fine-tuning their new J/36 MKII Peregrine for the competition. After a successful debut at the Figawi race, they are eager to see how their preparations pay off in the RTI. Scudder reported their excitement about experimenting with different sail configurations, aiming for optimal performance.
