Alpine bolsters its 2026 Formula 1 ambitions by appointing former FIA head of aerodynamics Jason Somerville as deputy technical director. This move is pivotal as it brings a key figure into the fold just as the team gains momentum in the new season.

Somerville, who recently completed a six-month gardening leave, officially joins Alpine’s technical structure under chief David Sanchez. His recruitment aligns with Alpine's strategic focus on the upcoming regulations overhaul, which he played a significant role in shaping during his tenure at the FIA.

The British engineer is eager to return to the competitive side of F1 after several years influencing the sport's regulatory landscape. "I am really excited to be back at Enstone," Somerville states, expressing his anticipation in contributing to the team's success.

Alpine has made strides in the early 2026 campaign, currently sitting fifth in the constructors’ standings with 23 points from drivers Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto. Somerville’s expertise not only enhances the technical depth but also reunites him with managing director Steve Nielsen, creating a strong foundation as Alpine aims for greater achievements this season.
