Valtteri Bottas returns to the Formula 1 grid this weekend at the Australian Grand Prix, but he faces a five-place grid penalty. Bottas hasn’t raced in over a year, and he starts his first race with Cadillac five positions lower than his qualifying spot due to a penalty from December 2024.
The penalty stems from an incident at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where Bottas spun Sergio Perez and later collided with Kevin Magnussen, ending his race. The stewards issued the penalty, which Bottas must serve at his next race—now, finally, at Albert Park.
Formula 1 regulations have changed, allowing for quicker penalties, but this one remains intact due to its retroactive clause. While Cadillac isn’t expected to be competitive at the front, Bottas’s return embodies the enduring nature of F1 penalties and regulations.
