Mike Costin, co-founder of Cosworth, faces a traction dilemma in F1 after the introduction of the iconic Ford DFV engine in the late sixties. To tackle grip issues, he proposes four-wheel drive designs to teams. In late 1968, Costin teams up with designer Robin Herd to develop a striking yet heavy Cosworth 4WD prototype. However, the car fails to impress during testing, with drivers finding it unwieldy. The arrival of wings and spoilers swiftly eliminates traction concerns, leaving the four-wheel drive concept obsolete. Ultimately, Costin and Keith Duckworth abandon the project, and the Cosworth 4WD never competes on the track.
