Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali emphasizes the urgent need for a decision on the sport's future engine formula as discussions heat up. Here is why this decision could reshape the landscape of F1 for the coming decade.
With the 2026 regulations firmly established, Domenicali warns that time is running out to finalize the next generation of power units. He stresses the importance of acting swiftly, stating, “We cannot lose too much time because time is passing so quickly.” The current framework, introduced in 2021, is only the beginning. Attention is now turning to what follows after 2030, as the sport balances innovation with the significant investments made by manufacturers.
Domenicali acknowledges the value of these partnerships, urging respect for the manufacturers who fuel F1’s global appeal. He confirms that the FIA will play a critical role in shaping the upcoming regulations, which must align with manufacturers' expectations.
While the final design of the new power units is still in flux, there's a growing consensus in the paddock for a simpler, lighter formula that incorporates sustainable fuels alongside traditional combustion engines. Domenicali envisions a future where motorsport remains true to its roots while advancing in sustainability, allowing for a more dynamic racing experience.
