Formula 1 stakeholders unite to make pivotal changes to the 2026 regulations, focusing on energy management and safety. This coordinated effort promises to enhance the on-track spectacle and address driver concerns.
Key adjustments include reducing the energy recharge limit during qualifying from 8MJ to 7MJ per lap, promoting aggressive driving and minimizing energy-saving tactics. The increase in "super clipping" recharge from 250kW to 350kW aims to eliminate lift-and-coast strategies, allowing for more consistent performance.
Safety protocols are also revamped, with new measures for race starts to alert drivers about slower cars and revised power limits to mitigate dangerous closing speeds on the track. There are also plans to improve car control during wet conditions, addressing earlier concerns about power delivery.
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem highlights the importance of safety and fairness, stating these changes reflect valuable feedback from drivers and engineers after the season's opening races. With full alignment among teams, manufacturers, and the FIA, the first test of these rule adjustments is set for the Miami Grand Prix, marking a significant step forward for Formula 1.
