The FIA executes a dramatic U-turn on the “Straight Mode” decision at the Albert Park circuit. After scrapping the high-speed activation zone due to safety concerns, the governing body reinstates it hours later following backlash from Formula 1 teams. The zone, located between Turns 8 and 9, allows cars to minimize drag and achieve top speeds by adjusting front and rear wings. FIA’s single-seater director, Nikolas Tombazis, initially prioritized safety, citing concerns about downforce levels making cars unpredictable. However, teams argued that their setups relied on all four zones, prompting the FIA to reconsider. The revised statement confirms that the “Straight Mode” activation Zone 4 will be in effect for FP3. The situation remains dynamic, with further evaluations planned during the session to assess car stability before qualifying.
