However, the latest decisions from the World Motor Sport Council are set to reshape Formula 1's engine landscape. Major updates to the regulations were confirmed during the FIA Conference held in Macau on June 23. These changes mark a significant pivot in the sport's approach to power units for the upcoming seasons of 2027 and 2028.

Moreover, the approved modifications shift the power balance from a strict 50/50 split between internal combustion engines (ICE) and electrical power to a new 60/40 ratio, favoring ICE. Changes to Power Output and Fuel Flow

Furthermore, under the new regulations, the output from the internal combustion engine will see an increase of 50 kW, reaching a total of 450 kW. In contrast, the maximum power output from the MGU-K will decrease to 300 kW. Overtake mode will remain capped at 350 kW, while the maximum harvesting capacity will rise from 350 kW to 400 kW. This adjustment is expected to enhance the excitement during races.

Additionally, to support the improved ICE performance, fuel flow rates will increase incrementally by 5% in 2027 and 13% in 2028. This gradual approach addresses previous worries in the paddock regarding shortened race distances. As teams face cost cap pressures, many planned to use existing chassis in 2027. This situation made it impractical to install larger fuel tanks, which the new regulations now accommodate.

Addressing Driver Concerns and Future Collaborations

Notably, these regulatory changes directly respond to the dissatisfaction among drivers regarding current regulations. Triple world champion Max Verstappen previously criticized minor adjustments as insufficient, describing them as merely a "tickle." The hope is that these significant alterations will keep Verstappen and other top drivers engaged in the sport through 2027.

Additionally, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem emphasized the importance of ongoing collaboration between the governing body and the motorsport community. He stated, “The FIA continues to oversee the evolution of the 2026 Regulations and work closely with all key stakeholders.” This partnership aims to ensure that the regulations balance innovation, sustainability, performance, and fan engagement as the sport progresses.
