On this day in 1955, Italy lost one of its most beloved sports figures, Alberto Ascari, the first world champion for Ferrari. This tragic event marks a pivotal moment in motorsport history, showcasing the risks and sacrifices of the sport.

Alberto Ascari, a legendary driver and the son of a pre-war racing star, amassed 13 Grand Prix victories and two world championships, both with Enzo Ferrari's Scuderia. His final race at Monaco ended in a dramatic crash while he was in second place, but he survived with only a broken nose. Just days later, Ascari visited Monza to support his friend Eugenio Castellotti during a test.

While taking a few laps in a Ferrari 750 Monza, disaster struck. On his third lap, the car skidded at the Curva del Vialone, now known as the Variante Ascari, and flipped over, ejecting him from the vehicle. Tragically, he succumbed to multiple injuries shortly after the accident, leaving a nation in mourning.

Ascari's legacy lives on, embodying the spirit of Italian motorsport and the enduring bond between driver and machine. His story reminds us of the fine line between triumph and tragedy in the world of racing.
