Audi racing director Allan McNish admits the team must resolve serious reliability issues with its power unit following a tumultuous Miami Grand Prix weekend. Here’s why these challenges could determine Audi's trajectory for the rest of the season.
McNish's team faced a series of setbacks in Florida, where initial promise quickly turned to frustration. Technical failures, overheating problems, and a costly disqualification marred what could have been one of Audi's best weekends. Gabriel Bortoleto was disqualified from Sprint Qualifying due to excessive engine intake air pressure, while Nico Hulkenberg's race ended prematurely due to a fire that prevented him from starting, followed by an overheating drivetrain issue.
McNish acknowledges that Audi's struggles are not unique in Formula 1’s competitive landscape, stating that many power unit manufacturers are grappling with similar challenges. However, he emphasizes the need for Audi to enhance its operational execution. The team is still in the early stages of understanding the complexities of its power unit, unlike competitors with established systems. McNish highlights that while the penalty for Bortoleto did not provide a performance advantage, it underscores the necessity to improve execution and learning processes within the team.
