Mercedes and McLaren take a significant step forward in tyre development during a two-day test at the Nürburgring. This collaboration reveals crucial insights into Pirelli's next-generation compounds.
On Tuesday, George Russell leads the charge for Mercedes, completing an impressive 127 laps. Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri faces challenges with only 65 laps due to a technical issue. By Wednesday, championship leader Kimi Antonelli logs 109 laps, just ahead of Lando Norris, who finishes with 108 laps. The teams focus on refining Pirelli’s C3 compound while also experimenting with softer tyre options to expand their data.
Norris emphasizes the importance of the test, stating, "This test was very productive. The aim was to help Pirelli with their tyre development for the future." Piastri shares his excitement about driving the historic circuit again, noting, “It’s always good to ensure all systems work and better understand the car, especially with the new regulations.”
This Nürburgring test follows a massive 297-lap wet-weather session by Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari last week at Fiorano. Pirelli's development continues mid-May at Magny-Cours, focusing on perfecting wet-weather tyres.
