Oscar Piastri is left “shocked and surprised” after crashing out of the Australian Grand Prix before the race even started. The McLaren driver experienced an unexpected surge of engine power during his reconnaissance lap, leading to a disastrous spin at Turn 4. Piastri, who qualified fifth, lost control after hitting the exit kerbs, slamming into the wall and severely damaging his car. The right-front wheel and suspension were wrecked, ending his race day instantly.
Despite walking away unharmed, Piastri expressed his disappointment, saying, "A scenario like that just shouldn't happen." He revealed that while cold tyres played a role, a sudden boost of about 100kW of power caught him off guard. “Everything was working normally,” he noted, highlighting the challenges posed by modern Formula 1 power units and their energy deployment.
