Racing Bulls faces a €30,000 fine after a technical failure during practice for the Canadian Grand Prix raises serious safety concerns. This incident reveals deeper issues within the team’s operations that could impact their season.
Liam Lawson's car stalled just 10 minutes into the session, triggering a red flag and disrupting all teams' preparations. Initially thought to be a minor mechanical failure, it escalated when marshals struggled to recover the car. The FIA stewards identified the problem as a failure in the Clutch Disengagement System (CDS), designed to allow safe movement of stopped cars. A hydraulic leak caused the car to halt, and when marshals activated the CDS, it failed to work, leading to a full red flag instead of a Virtual Safety Car deployment.
The FIA emphasized the seriousness of the failure, noting that Racing Bulls had previously been warned about the CDS design in 2025. While they avoided a heavier penalty, €20,000 of the fine is suspended for 12 months, contingent on no further issues. Lawson also criticized the marshals for their handling of the situation, highlighting a need for improved safety protocols. This incident puts Racing Bulls' reliability and safety measures under the spotlight as they move forward in the season.
