Red Bull is now recognized as Formula 1’s top engine manufacturer following the FIA's surprising verdict in its first Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) assessment. This revelation challenges the long-held belief that Mercedes held the superior power unit, particularly as the championship standings suggested otherwise.
The FIA’s evaluation designates the co-branded Red Bull Powertrains-Ford engine as the highest-performing unit, establishing it as the benchmark for competitors. This ruling means Red Bull does not qualify for additional development concessions, while rivals Mercedes and Ferrari will benefit from upgrades in the 2026 season.
The ADUO system is designed to prevent any manufacturer from lagging too far behind under strict engine regulations. If a manufacturer is more than 2% off the benchmark, they earn extra development opportunities. Mercedes has been found to be over 2% behind, allowing for one upgrade homologation in 2026 and another in 2027, along with an additional $3 million in cost-cap spending. Ferrari, classified more than 4% off, will receive the chance for two homologations this season and two next year.
This unexpected ruling shifts the competitive landscape in F1, creating significant opportunities for Red Bull's competitors to catch up.
