George Russell passionately advocates for Formula 1's return to the Nürburgring after experiencing the historic circuit during a Pirelli tyre test. Here’s why Russell's call could reshape the calendar for the 2024 season.
The 5.14 km Nürburgring, steeped in F1 history, echoed with the sounds of modern racing once again, igniting memories of its Grand Prix heritage. Russell expressed his enthusiasm after a morning of testing, stating, “I really love the Nürburgring. It truly is a traditional old-school circuit. I’d love to be back racing here one day.” Germany has not hosted a Formula 1 event since the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix, which makes Russell's sentiments even more significant.
During the test, teams like Mercedes and McLaren faced strict regulations, focusing solely on tyre evaluations without the chance to work on known issues, such as race starts. Russell noted the limitations but emphasized the importance of data analysis, stating, “Our sport is different because you don’t get the opportunity to practice so much.”
While the current presence at the Nürburgring is only a fleeting test, Russell’s fervor hints at a longing for a permanent return, reminding fans and officials alike of the timeless appeal these classic circuits hold in the world of motorsport.
