Mercedes dominates the early 2026 season with Kimi Antonelli and George Russell leading the charge, but Russell remains skeptical about title hype. Here’s why his cautious approach could be crucial as the season unfolds.
After three races, Mercedes showcases its strength with wins in Australia, China, and Japan. Russell kicks off the campaign with a powerful victory, while Antonelli secures two impressive wins, placing him atop the championship standings. The W17 car is currently the benchmark, praised for its performance across the paddock.
Despite this success, Russell emphasizes the need for caution. He recalls 2022, where early frontrunners like Charles Leclerc and Ferrari faltered as the season progressed. Russell insists on a “race by race” mentality, focusing on maximizing performance rather than getting ahead of themselves.
He acknowledges the strong foundation Mercedes has built but warns that competitors like McLaren are lurking. With Oscar Piastri nearly clinching a win in Suzuka, the battle for supremacy is far from settled.
For now, Russell remains grounded. “The championship is not even in my mind,” he states. As the season develops, it’s clear that while Mercedes has speed, the unpredictable nature of Formula 1 means anything can happen.
