Carlos Sainz becomes the first F1 driver to lap the Madring circuit, and his initial impressions are electrifying. This new venue, set to host the Spanish Grand Prix in 2026, promises to elevate the racing spectacle to new heights.
Sainz recently took a 450bhp Ford Mustang GT for a spin around the 5.4km layout, and he highlights its potential for aggressive racing and tactical energy management. The opening chicane at Turn 1-2 emerges as a prime overtaking opportunity, while the long acceleration stretch towards Turns 5-6 could turn battery deployment into a strategic advantage.
The real excitement kicks in as the track moves from public roads into purpose-built sections after Turn 9. Sainz describes this area as where drivers can truly enjoy a Formula 1 car at its peak performance. La Monumental, the circuit's standout feature, boasts a staggering 24% gradient and a blind entry, capturing Sainz's admiration.
He expresses his surprise at its design, saying, “You’ve created quite a cocktail.” With a mix of speed, banking, and visibility challenges, the Madring is set to become one of F1's most thrilling modern tracks, featuring multiple overtaking zones and high-speed sequences reminiscent of legendary circuits.
