McLaren’s 2026 Formula 1 title defence stumbles out of the gate, with the team currently sitting third in the constructors’ standings, trailing Mercedes and Ferrari. Here’s why this slow start could reshape their entire season.
Team boss Andrea Stella reveals that McLaren’s challenges stem from a complex interplay of factors. Adapting to Mercedes’ new-generation power unit has proven crucial. It has not only hampered their results but also stifled development progress. “It took longer than expected to learn how to harness the full potential offered by the power unit,” Stella states, highlighting reliability issues that have plagued the early races.
Moreover, last year’s intense championship battle has impacted the design of the MCL40. McLaren prioritized a robust launch spec aimed at future development, accepting a slower start to the season. This decision has allowed rivals to gain an edge.
Despite these setbacks, Stella remains optimistic. He points to the resilience within the team and early signs of progress, notably Oscar Piastri’s impressive second-place finish in Japan.
