Francesca Clapcich is set to embark on a groundbreaking adventure in the Vendée Arctique-Les Sables d'Olonne on June 7, 2026. This race not only pushes the limits of offshore sailing but also serves as a critical qualifier for the Vendée Globe.
Clapcich will navigate her 60-foot foiling IMOCA, aiming for the Arctic Circle with no fixed course, allowing for unprecedented strategic freedom. The fleet of nine boats departs from Les Sables d'Olonne, France, at 1302 CEST, and will face a dynamic challenge as they choose their own routes to cross the Arctic Circle at 66 degrees north latitude. With the race expected to last around ten days, Clapcich emphasizes the importance of tactical decisions from the very start.
Current forecasts suggest light winds at the outset, but a favorable southwesterly breeze is anticipated as competitors venture into Biscay. Clapcich's commitment to ocean health is evident, as her team, supported by 11th Hour Racing, implements a Nature Action Plan to protect marine ecosystems along the route.
This innovative race format promises to keep the competition intense and unpredictable, highlighting Clapcich’s strategic acumen and dedication to sustainability in sailing.
