Caribbean Inclusive Sailing Championship: A New Era

Moreover, the recent Caribbean Inclusive Development Programme (IDP) at the National Sailing Academy in Antigua marked a groundbreaking moment for inclusive sailing. Taking place from June 21 to June 27, the event drew together coaches, sailors, and leaders from various Caribbean nations. This week-long initiative focused on education, collaboration, and the expansion of opportunities within para sailing.

Furthermore, the programme combined four days of intensive training with the inaugural Caribbean Inclusive Sailing Championship, held from June 24 to June 27. Sailors competed in RS Venture Connect boats, specially designed for inclusive racing. While the regatta offered thrilling competition, the true achievement was the sense of community and the educational foundation established through the IDP.

Empowering Communities Through Sailing

Additionally, the IDP brought together participants from ten nations, including Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, and Barbados. A total of 23 sailors, coaches, and programme leaders collaborated to enhance their knowledge and skills. This initiative aimed at fostering para and inclusive sailing throughout the Caribbean.

Notably, the RS Venture Connect boat played a crucial role in the programme. Its innovative Seated Control System allows sailors with various physical, sensory, and intellectual impairments to compete alongside able-bodied sailors. This approach emphasizes teamwork, tactical thinking, and sailing expertise as keys to success.

Lasting Impact and Future Aspirations

Consequently, Hannah Stodel, the Para World Sailing Manager at World Sailing, led the programme, focusing on building confidence among coaches and establishing sustainable practices. She emphasized the unique aspect of the IDP: “It is a space where people come together, support each other, and leave stronger than when they arrived.”

In addition, the week was characterized by a spirit of camaraderie and shared experiences. Coaches learned from one another, and sailors gained invaluable skills, fostering independence and confidence. Volunteers and supporters played vital roles in creating an environment where success was attainable for all.

In summary, the Caribbean Inclusive Development Programme stands as a beacon of hope and progress in the realm of sailing. It not only resulted in a championship but also laid the groundwork for a supportive and inclusive sailing community. With aspirations for Team Antigua to compete in the Paralympic Games, the programme highlights the importance of empowering individuals with disabilities and promoting inclusivity in sports.
