Italy's Triumph at the Junior European Championships
Recently, the 2026 420 & 470 Junior European Championships concluded in Nida, Lithuania. Italy's Lisa Vucetti and Vittorio Bonifacio emerged as champions in the 470 category. Their victory came just a week after they claimed the Junior World Championship title. The duo exhibited remarkable skill and teamwork throughout the competition, showcasing their dominance from the very first races.
Throughout the event, Vucetti and Bonifacio maintained their lead and entered the medal races with a significant advantage. Their consistent performance highlighted their exceptional boat speed and tactical prowess. Vucetti expressed her satisfaction, stating, "It feels very, very good. It was a tough week because I had some back pain, but we managed to keep the lead every day."
Challenging Conditions in Medal Races
Moreover, the medal race day posed significant challenges. Heavy rain and strong winds tested the sailors’ skills. The first race saw an individual recall, as several boats started early. While the Croatian and German teams successfully restarted, the British crew faced penalties for their early attempt.
The opening medal race was won by France's Lomane Valade and Julien Bunel, who kept their podium hopes alive. The Ukrainian team, consisting of Sviatoslav Madonich and Yelyzaveta Vasylenko, also performed admirably, securing a strong third place in this race. Madonich commented, "We had difficult conditions with heavy rain and strong wind, but we sailed an amazing first race."
Emotions and Achievements on the Podium
Additionally, the second medal race saw a remarkable comeback for Germany. After finishing seventh in the first race, Amelie Wehrle and Riccardo Honold clinched victory in the second race. This win secured them the bronze medal overall, just two points ahead of the French crew. Honold expressed their relief, saying, "Winning the second medal race was a great way to finish the championship."
Furthermore, both the Italian champions and the Ukrainian duo excelled in both overall standings and the Under-21 category. The Under-21 podium was completed by France's Swan Berier Joyet and Aïnoa Phillipe Sasiain, who finished 11th overall. In the U19 category, Germany's Amelina Jäger and Caspar Fischer claimed the top spot, with French pair Simon Prot and Juliette Peyre taking second.
