Japan and Fiji are eyeing a potential spot in the Rugby Championship, as confirmed by SA Rugby president Mark Alexander. This could reshape the tournament landscape, which last expanded in 2012 with Argentina's inclusion.
Fans will discover why these two nations, following impressive Rugby World Cup performances, are key contenders for future expansion. Reports indicate that both Japan and Fiji have bid to join the Rugby Championship by 2026, though initial applications were turned down.
However, Alexander reveals that SANZAAR is still considering their integration, emphasizing a gradual approach. He suggests that incorporating their under-20 teams into the age-group competition could serve as a testing ground. “The stepping stone for us, for Japan and Fiji, is to include (their) under-20 teams,” he stated, highlighting the importance of starting small.
Both nations will participate in the upcoming Nations Championship, making their inclusion in the Rugby Championship a logical progression. With South Africa, New Zealand, Argentina, and Australia committed to the current structure until 2030, any expansion may take time. SANZAAR CEO Brendan Morris underscored the organization's dedication to evolving southern hemisphere rugby, promising exciting developments in the years ahead.
