Downs Sailing Club kicks off the KSSA season with a challenging opener that puts sailors’ skills to the test. This event offers a sneak peek at what's to come in the NSSA National Youth Regatta later this summer.
The competition features a strong turnout, particularly from Downs SC, with participants divided into a Main Fleet and a Regatta Fleet. The dual-course format promotes racing for newcomers while keeping seasoned sailors engaged. The light, shifting winds and strong tides of the Goodwin Sands create a tactically complex racecourse, where success hinges on precise starts and strategic positioning.
In the Main Fleet, the Portsmouth Yardstick racing emphasizes consistency and awareness, with clubs like Whitstable YC and Margate YC frequently battling for top spots. Meanwhile, the Regatta Fleet experiences very light winds, providing a solid introduction to racing with a compact triangular track.
Henry Moss from Downs SC clinches overall honors, while notable performances come from Kevin Geng and David Liu of The King's School in the Fevas and Willian Graham from Whitstable YC in the Toppers. Jacob Grilli and Matthew Williams, both from Downs SC, shine in the Topper 4.2 fleet. Special Endeavour goes to Dylan Irons, with the first female sailor prize awarded to Dora Wang and Athena Cox from The King's School.
