Gresini Racing secures Iker Lecuona as the injury replacement for Alex Marquez at the Hungarian MotoGP in Balaton Park. This marks Lecuona’s first MotoGP appearance in nearly three years, stepping in while Marquez continues to recover from a serious crash in Barcelona.

Stay tuned because this decision sheds light on the intricate dynamics of MotoGP and World Superbike.

Lecuona, a 26-year-old rider, previously raced full-time in MotoGP with Tech3 KTM and has proven his mettle in WorldSBK, finishing second in a remarkable 15 consecutive races to teammate Nicolo Bulega. Bulega, who is also 26, is currently on a historic streak of 22 wins in WorldSBK but was unavailable for the Mugello round due to a scheduling clash. Instead, Michele Pirro filled in for Marquez, though his role in testing Ducati's new 850cc prototype for 2027 is crucial.

Italian media reports confirm Bulega's move to MotoGP with the VR46 Ducati team for 2027, suggesting that Ducati prioritizes his fitness over additional MotoGP experience. Lecuona’s call-up might be a strategic reward for his strong performance in WorldSBK, while Marquez’s recovery timeline remains uncertain. Additionally, Cal Crutchlow continues to stand in for Johann Zarco at LCR Honda.
