José Berríos officially undergoes Tommy John surgery, a significant setback for the Toronto Blue Jays' pitching staff. This decision leaves the veteran starter sidelined well into the 2027 season, raising concerns for the team's future.
The surgery, performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Texas, was necessary after a loose body was discovered on Berríos' ligament, contradicting initial hopes for a less invasive procedure. Manager John Schneider expressed disappointment, stating, “It sucks for him, it sucks for us,” emphasizing the impact of Berríos' absence.
At 31, Berríos started the season on the injured list due to a stress fracture and struggled in his rehab appearances, posting a troubling 10.67 ERA. Since being acquired from the Minnesota Twins in July 2021, he has been a reliable presence, boasting a 53-39 record with a 4.09 ERA over four seasons.
This surgery compounds the challenges for a Toronto rotation already reeling from injuries. Shane Bieber remains out with forearm stiffness, and Cody Ponce is sidelined with a knee injury. As the Blue Jays sit at 21-27, 11.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East, the road ahead looks increasingly difficult without Berríos.
