Branch Rickey, the Dodgers’ president, initially had his sights set on Monte Irvin but shifted to Robinson after Irvin’s team owner resisted. Robinson signed with the Dodgers on October 23, 1945, becoming a symbol of hope and change.
His journey began on April 15, 1947, when he stepped onto the field amid a storm of racial abuse. Opponents aimed to intimidate him, often resorting to violence on the field. Despite this, Robinson shone, finishing his rookie year with a .297 batting average, 125 runs scored, and leading the National League with 29 stolen bases. His performance earned him the National League Rookie of the Year award.
